John William Smith, fourth child of John P. Smith and Catherine M. Finney, was born 6 March 1852 in Elkton, Todd, Kentucky. He lived his entire life in Elkton.
He married Jennie Ella Mobley, 22 November 1877 in Elkton. John and Jennie had five children - Ruby Clair Smith, Maurice Warfield Smith, Shelby Russell Smith, Mary Elizabeth Smith, and John William Smith, Jr.. They were all born in Elkton.
John was a farmer and a liveryman; the family also took in boarders.
After the death of John's mother, Catherine Finney Smith, his father John P. Smith moved in with John and Jennie and their family.
John died 30 March 1904 in Elkton, leaving Jennie; children: Mrs. Ruby Vandegrift (25), Maurice (24), Shelby (21), Mary Elizabeth (19) and Jack (10); and widowed father John P. Smith.
John and Jennie were buried in Glenwood Cemetery in Elkton.
