Jennie Ella Mobley, second child of William Ellison Mobley and Mary Elizabeth Burrus, was born 2 June 1853 in Todd county, Kentucky. She joined an older sister, Mary "Mollie" Stewart Mobley; later followed siblings William Luther, Alexander, Bettie, and James Blanton Mobley. Jennie's father William was a minister for the Elkton Christian church from the time she was four years old and served in that capacity most of his life.
On 22 November 1877, Jennie married John William Smith. They settled in Elkton and lived there all their lives. John and Jennie had five children - Ruby Clair Smith, Maurice Warfield Smith, Shelby Russell Smith, Mary Elizabeth Smith, and John William Smith, Jr..
John was a farmer and a liveryman; the family also took in boarders.
On 27 December 1884, Jennie's mother Elizabeth Mobley died. Her father William remarried to Nellie O. Hester in 1888. They had no children.
After the death of John's mother, Catherine Finney Smith, his father John P. Smith moved in with John and Jennie and their family.
John died 30 March 1904 in Elkton, leaving Jennie; children: Mrs. Ruby Vandegrift (25), Maurice (24), Shelby (21), Mary Elizabeth (19) and Jack (10); and widowed father John P. Smith.
Jennie's father William died on 22 April 1911 and was buried in Glenwood Cemetery in Elkton.
Jennie spent 43 years as a widow before she died on 24 September 1947 in Elkton. She left behind five children and seven grandchildren.
John and Jennie were buried in Glenwood Cemetery in Elkton.
