John grew up in the southern Montana/northern Wyoming area. He married Mary Corrine "Corky" Harker, a native of Sheridan, Sheridan county, Wyoming, on 15 March 1941 in Sheridan. Their daughter Sharon Ann Keithler was born in Sheridan on 28 December 1941.

During World War II, John, Corky, and Sharon relocated with John's parents Howard and Adina to Washington State. John and Corky bought a home near Vancouver in Felida, Clark, Washington. On 4 May 1950, John died suddenly at the age of 29 from an aneurysm. He died in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon, and was buried in Vancouver in Park Hill Cemetery.

Corky eventually moved back to Sheridan, remarried, and raised Sharon to adulthood. Sharon died on 10 June 1962 in a car accident. Corky died in Wyoming in 1999.
