Ruby Clair Smith Vandegrift

Ruby Clair Smith, oldest child of John William Smith and Jennie Ella Mobley, was born on 29 October 1878 in Elkton, Todd, Kentucky. She was raised in Elkton.



Ruby married Lucien Eugene Vandegrift, who was born 30 January 1870 in Stevenson, Jackson, Alabama. Lucien was the son of John Leonard Vandegrift and Mary Lucinda Braden.

Lucien and Ruby married 16 November 1898 in Elkton, and resided with Lucien's family in Alabama before settling in Nashville, Davidson, Tennessee.

Of Ruby and Lucien's three children, only one survived to adulthood. Their first child was born and died before the 1910 Census; their second, a son, is still living; and the third, Clair Vandegrift, was born and died about 1916 in Nashville.

Lucien died on 8 July 1947 in Nashville. Ruby died 6 January 1971 in Christian county, Kentucky; they were buried in Nashville.
